Security
How your messages are protected.
What is protected today, what is not yet, and how to tell us if you find a problem.
Messages are locked on your device
Each message, photo, file and voice message in your chats with people is encrypted on your phone or computer before it leaves. Only you and the people in the conversation hold the key, so Tóvox cannot read your messages. The exception is a message you choose to have translated on our server: Tóvox asks you once first, and the text is translated and not kept. Business chats with an organisation's staff are not end-to-end encrypted: the staff can read them, and the chat says so.
Every message has its own key
There is no master key and no back door. Each device you sign in on gets its own keys.
Translation stays with us
Translation happens on your device when your browser can do it. Otherwise it runs on servers Tóvox operates itself, and the text is not kept after it is translated. It is never sent to an outside company.
Our own servers
Tóvox runs on servers we operate. Sign-in is through Google, Microsoft or Apple, so we never hold a password for you.
What is not end-to-end encrypted
Meetings (their sound and video are encrypted on the way to our own meeting server and are readable there during the meeting, not end to end), Tóvox Mail, and chats with Skye and other bots. Text or speech you send to our servers for translation or speech to text is read there to do the job and is not kept. Our servers can also see who you talk to and when.
The privacy policy lists exactly what is and is not end-to-end encrypted.
