Questions and answers.

Quick answers about how Tóvox works, what it costs and how your messages are kept private.

Getting started

What is Tóvox?
A messaging app that translates for you. You write in your language, the other person reads it in theirs, and their replies come back in yours. It covers one-to-one and shared chats, and voice and video calls. Meetings are coming soon.
Is it free?
Yes. Tóvox is free during the beta.
How do I sign in?
With your Google, Microsoft or Apple account. There is no separate password to remember.
Do I need to download an app?
No. Tóvox works in the browser on any phone or computer. You can add it to your home screen so it opens like an app. See how.

Translation

How does translation work?
Everyone sets their language once. Messages from others are then translated into yours, with the original just above. Your browser translates on the device when it can; the first time a message needs our server instead, Tóvox asks you, and until you agree such messages show a Translate button. You can switch Auto-translate off in Settings and tap Translate on a message instead.
Which languages are there?
35 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Russian.
Can I see what the other person actually wrote?
Yes. The original words stay just above the translation.
How accurate is it?
Translation is very good for everyday conversation but it is not perfect. Do not rely on it for legal, medical or safety-critical messages.

Privacy and safety

Can Tóvox read my messages?
Messages in your chats with people (text, photos, files and voice messages) are locked on your device before they are sent, and only your devices and theirs hold the keys. Tóvox cannot read them, except a message you choose to have translated on our server (Tóvox asks you once first, and the text is not kept).
Where is translation done?
On your device when your browser can do it, otherwise on servers Tóvox operates itself, which do not keep the text. Never by an outside company. In an end-to-end encrypted chat, Tóvox asks you once before message text first leaves your device to be translated.
Is everything end-to-end encrypted?
No. Meetings, Tóvox Mail and chats with Skye and other bots are not end-to-end encrypted, and text or speech you send to our servers for translation or speech to text is read there to do the job (and not kept). Our servers can also see who you talk to and when. Read about security.
What is Vigía?
Coming soon. Vigía (Spanish for lookout) is a safety mode for a walk home, a run or a rideshare. Your chosen contacts can follow along, and if you miss a check-in they are told.

Alerts

How do I turn on alerts?
Open Tóvox and tap Turn on in the bar at the top, then choose Allow. You can switch alerts off again in Settings.
How do I get alerts on iPhone or iPad?
Apple only allows alerts for web apps on the Home Screen. Open tovox.io in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Open Tóvox from the Home Screen icon, then tap Turn on.
I blocked alerts by mistake. How do I allow them?
  • Chrome on a computer: Click the settings icon at the left of the address bar, set Notifications to Allow, then reload the page.
  • Edge on a computer: Click the lock icon at the left of the address bar, choose Permissions for this site, set Notifications to Allow, then reload the page.
  • Firefox: Click the icon at the left of the address bar, remove the blocked Notifications permission, reload the page and choose Allow when asked.
  • Safari on a Mac: Open Safari, then Settings, then Websites, then Notifications. Set chat.tovox.io to Allow, then reload the page.
  • Android: Tap the icon at the left of the address bar, then Permissions, then Notifications, and set it to Allow.
  • iPhone or iPad (from the Home Screen): Open the Settings app, then Notifications, then Tóvox, and turn on Allow Notifications.
  • Other browsers: Open your browser’s site settings for chat.tovox.io, set Notifications to Allow, then reload the page.
Alerts are allowed but nothing arrives.
On a computer, check the browser itself may show notifications: on a Mac, open System Settings, then Notifications, then your browser, and turn on Allow notifications. Also check Focus or Do Not Disturb is off.
Do alerts show my messages?
No. An alert says only a few plain words, such as “New message”, “Incoming call” or “Missed call”, and safety and account alerts say only “Open Tóvox for details”: not who it is from, not the chat’s name and never the words. Open Tóvox to see who wrote.

Calls and meetings

Can I call people?
Yes, voice and video calls with anyone in your chats. If the connection drops, the call reconnects on its own.
How do meetings work?
Coming soon. You will be able to start a video meeting and share the link with the people you want there.
What is festival mode?
Coming soon: push-to-talk for your crew at festivals, concerts and events.
